Working For Yourself

The majority of America is actually uneducated. More than likely, you are also probablyschool31.gif uneducated. So you say, “Wait a second, I went to school. I went to college. I’ve read my history and I’ve studied math. How can you say that I am uneducated?” I say that, because the primary reason why you went to school was so you can learn to the skills that you supposedly need to make a living for when you are an adult. Unfortunately, the skills that you were taught were what is necessary for you to make a living working for someone else. And yes, that someone else is usually a corporation run by people all the way down to the directorship level that don’t do a thing all day long and never will for the rest of their lives.

If you go back over a hundred years ago, people had to make their living working for themselves. They worked jobs such as farmers, blacksmiths, clothing makers, town doctors, carpenters, etc.. When people of today look back at this, they think of the people back then as being rather primitive. The truth of the matter is, those people back then knew how to make a living for themselves. They didn’t have to depend on someone to give them a job. Although there were areas where people did work for someone such as in the steel industry, they were unionized and viewed their jobs as their own company. They owned their jobs and they had far more rights than any of us do today when working for a corporation. Why is this? Although we still have unions today, it isn’t anything compared to what it use to be. As salaried employees outside of unions, people are out for themselves these days. If someone is being treated unfairly at work as an employee, no one will go on strike for that person nor is there anyone there to represent that person. You are on your own when working for a corporation. That corporation can threaten you with your job if you don’t agree to work overtime for free. They can threaten you with your job if you do not agree to take on extra work for no increase in salary. They can also replace you with someone else if they can find someone to do your work for much less. You have no power in these situations. You are also subjected to performance reviews once a year. These reviews are given by your manager of whom cannot evaluate your performance fairly because they cannot do your job themselves nor understand fully what it is that you do. So, for reasons beyond your control, or a misunderstanding by your manager, you can be passed over for a “cost of living” raise one year. If that happens, you have to wait all the way until the following year to see if you can get a raise. So basically, you would have gone 2 years without any kind of pay increase whatsoever. In fact, you got a pay cut since the cost of living rises 2% on average per year.

Corporations violate your human liberties every day. And what is ironic about corporations, is that they depend upon a free market with free people in order to survive. However, corporations internally are structured as a communist dictatorship. That is because you have very few rights as an employee. You perform all the work while the people at the top do nothing and enjoy the fruits of your labor. They also elect themselves to leadership positions and reserve other high paying leadership positions for their extended family members, investment affiliates, and “country club friends”. You have no democratic right within the company to even elect your own manager. You should even have a democratic right to be able to vote on what your salaries should be. If you don’t think this concept would work, it actually does.

Yet, we spend almost 20 years or more of our lives attending school to learn how to work for a corporation. Where is it within that 20 years that we are taught to discover our own skills and talents and then put them to use to be able to work for ourselves? I’m not talking about art classes or the elective classes where we can choose to learn something that we might be interested in outside of english, science, and mathematics. But rather, what would the process be of how to research the market, adjust your skills and talents to meet current demands, set yourself up as a self employed entity, how to network and build connections to increase your business success, etc..

The greatest reward of all in being able to earn a dollar on your own without depending on someone’s hand to feed you is the sense of freedom that you will experience. The reality is that work can actually be very enjoyable if you receive 100% of the rewards. And that is primarily what America was founded on. It was founded on the principle of a free market system and on a system where you have the right be anything you want. You are actually selling yourself short as a human if you don’t at explore at sometime in your life what it is that you can do to earn a dollar for yourself. Working for a corporation has been slowly turning into modern slavery.
