Student Tasering
I’ve heard many different versions and opinions of the student tasering in Florida during John Kerry’s visit. So I guess I will give my own because I don’t agree with anything I’ve heard.
First of all, part of what happen was set up. What this guy wanted to do was ask a controversial question about “Skull and Bones” and also ask another controversial question about a book that suggests Kerry had overthrown the election. The student of course wanted the question and answering to be caught on camera so he could of course be a star on YouTube.com.
However, I don’t think this guy expected to be tasered or whisked out by the “police”. That wasn’t set up. And of course, they weren’t really police, they were campus police. Basically just security people. So I think the whole event actually turned out bigger than what the student had planned for. Not only did he make YouTube, but he also made it into every media outlet there is.
The only thing I wondered about is what exactly made the “campus police” go after this guy so suddenly. We know it had something to do with the “Skull and Bones” thing, but did they go after him because they were told prior to the whole event that if anyone asks anything about the “Skull and Bones” to escort them out, or did one of Kerry’s personal guards signal the campus police to go after the guy? Assuming that Kerry brings some of his own people with him.
What I didn’t like about the media attention was that if it had been a Republican candidate on stage, and perhaps the student was anything other than a white male, I’m sure the media-outlets would have turned the whole thing into another Rodney King story and screamed racism and bloody murder. But in this case, the mainstream media outlets portrayed the guy as being a criminal and were on the side of the rent-a-cops that tasered him.
The only mistake the rent-a-cops made is that the guy was tasered. Because these campus police aren’t real police. It would be no different than a security person at a music concert tasering someone. Ya just can’t do it unless the person you are escorting out makes clear obvious threats of harm or takes swings at you. So it was a mistake to taser this guy, because aside from being difficult to escort out, he didn’t make any threats or physically try to fight anyone. I’m sure he will sue the University.
