Personalizing your Blog

The tip I always see from other Blogsters is to personalize your blog.   Depending how you look at it, there can be a pro to not personalizing it.   How come?

Now let’s say you do personalize your blog.  It happens to get good traffic.  Now you are ranked and your site is worth $XXXXXX.   Well, if you were to sell it, then it would not be yours any longer.  Unless you sell it and keep writing in it, in my opinion, it becomes worthless to whomever bought it.  For example, I read StevePavlina.com because I like what Steve writes.  But if Steve sold his blog and was no longer writing for it, then I would not visit the page anymore because Steve is not the one writing for it because someone else bought it.   Traffic would decrease for that site I think.

So basically,  I think personalizing your blog does better your chances of getting traffic.  However, if you can gain traffic without personalizing your blog, then you just might have a true goldmine.   iVillage.com is a great example.  It’s not a personal website…..but it sold for $16 million.

On the other hand, personalizing your website turns you into a commodity, not your website.  So, although I don’t really think a personalized website could sell very well, I do think in the long run it could make you more money by turning you into a commodity.  So wherever you write, people will follow.

I haven’t decided whether or not I want to personalize my site yet.  The cool thing is, you can kind of make yourself famous.   It’s like being the star of your own TV channel.   So whether or not I am going to personalize my blog is definitely something I have to think about.   It depends on what more ideas will come to me as to what I want to do with this site.
