Perception: Part I

What does perception have to do with personal development? Perception can most definitely mean the difference between a great life, or a lousy one. For the most part, perception is about understanding the world around you and the reality of what is truly happening. There are plenty of normally functioning adults that have good jobs, families, nice homes, etc., but actually have a false or a warped view of the world around them. They misunderstand what is going on around them. Part of it is apathy, self absorbency, or even the inability to think or understand things on a complex or sophisticated level.

For example, one day I was driving behind some elderly lady in a new Lexus that seemed as if she couldn’t even barely tell what a green light meant. I thought to myself, “Here is someone who obviously has her finances in order, who probably knows money, and knows quality. Heck, she’s driving a new Lexus. But acts like she’s never seen a traffic sign before.” A few minutes later, I saw another car on the road being driven by some young guy. He seemed like a good driver. Very responsive. But yet, he was driving an old cheap V-6 version of a camaro. On the side of the camaro was a sticker that said “SS”. I laughed, and thought to myself, “This guy probably thinks that having a sticker on the side of his car that says “SS” suddenly makes it into a camaro supersport model. Or at least he thinks he is fooling people that he is driving one.” That’s almost as bad as me taking the decal off of a Mercedes, and putting it onto a chevy cavalier and driving it around hoping that I fool people into thinking I drive a luxury car. This isn’t the greatest example, but it goes to show that there are people out there that are perfectly functional adults that don’t seemed screwed up at all, but yet have an immature or warped view of the world. Yet on the other hand, here you have an elderly woman that definitely knows money and definitely knows how to get the most out of life, but yet has the hardest time in the world keeping her car in one lane and figuring out what red and green lights mean. Both her, and the young punk driving the camaro live in two completely different worlds in terms of perception. I’d have to say the elderly lady’s perception is probably much more mature.

Basically, you’ll find that people who are upper elites, that have the system work for them rather than working for the system, have a completely different view of the world than the common lay person. They see the bigger picture. They have a superior understanding as to how to live comfortably in this world. They make intelligent wise decisions. And they have extraordinary foresight. What this leads to is that the key to success is in the head. What you have going on between your ears is what determines how your life will be. Yes, there are functioning adults with good jobs, families, homes, etc., but have a poor understanding of the world around them. If they are able to get along in life with their low powered brains, then you can certainly do much better than them. You can assume that 75% of people you see out in the general public every day are idiots. Yet, a lot of them probably make the same, if not, more money than you. Well, today is the day that you can realize that if they can do it, then you can do it better. The fact that you are even sitting here reading this shows you have more aptitude than most people around you. Most people of the general public are not reading personal development websites right now. They are watching american idol or britney spears on TV at the moment. That’s what they think is important in life.

So now that you know this, it’s just a matter of improvising and strategy. You need to improvise. You can be more successful than most people out there even if you aren’t at the moment. Remember, a lot of big games have been won in the 4th quarter. Just because most are ahead of you now doesn’t mean they have the game won.

I’ll be writing more on perception, so be on the lookout for upcoming articles.   Stay tuned.
