Corporate Success
Your obsession can dictate who you become and how successful you are. Unfortunately for a lot of us, our obsessions aren’t anything we can make a living off of, so we are forced to so something we simply hate. What am I getting at?
Just because someone is getting ahead of you at the office doesn’t necessarily mean they are more intelligent than you. The difference between you and them is that they simply have a heck of a lot more interest in what they are doing than you do. Take the world of engineering for example. Just about any job within this field, no matter the discipline, absolutely sucks and it completely boring and unrewarding. Yet, there are people working in this field that will spend every second of the day working, stay after hours, and then carry their work home with them as a hobby. I’ve seen engineers that are dads go into work on Fathers Day for Christ sake even though they didn’t have to. People that carry this kind of obsession are going to succeed. And they are going to move ahead of you unless you either develop this kind of obsession, or you have personal connections with those who are doing the promoting. Either way, a lot of us will never have any of those two options at our advantage.
If you feel that you fall into this realm, consider yourself blessed. Because you are destined for better things. But it is your job to find out what that is and make it happen. The rest of the “busy body” types can spend the rest of their lives with their heads buried in their cubicles trading their time for dollars. Being told how much they are going to be paid. Being told when they can take vacation. Being told when they can eat lunch. And being told what time they have to come into work. Better known as Corporate Slavery.
I see this all too often with people. It’s always these types that are “over achievers”. All the way through high school and college, they got nothing but straight A’s. They are part of every club and have achieved everything there is to achieve. They get into the corporate world, and it’s the same thing. The only problem is I have such a hard time believing that these types are as “brilliant” as they think they are. I have ever yet to meet a person from this category that exhibits genius in other areas as well. I have one guy in my work area that thinks pretty highly of himself. A big over achiever that “knows everything there is to know about everything”. The manager loves this guy because he works every second of the day, stays overtime, and only takes time out to talk out loud about what he “knows”. But I had to question, if this guy is so brilliant, then why is he so fat? I mean really. If this guy knows everything there is to know about everything, then he should know everything there is to know about diet and fitness. Apparently he is nothing but a failure in this area. Why is this guy trading his time for dollars? If he know everything there is to know about everything, then he’d definitely have his own business and be raking in millions. Why is his wife on the bottom end of the totem pole when it comes to female status? Must not have desirable traits to breed with. It’s almost nature’s way of saying that this guy is worthless to the world. The only thing this guy has to offer is a personality disorder that enables him to be completely obsessive in a perverse kind of way about something that is completely boring in the same way that some men are addicted to something like porn.
So there you go. Move past these people. Not at the office, but in life. Stop trading your time for dollars. Obtain some skills at the office, and then apply those skills to move on to better things. It’s people like you that are the ones that have the real opportunity to hit it big. The “over achievers” at the office lack this vision. They will never make anything of themselves other than excellent Corporate Slaves.
