The definition of mental disorder is a psychological or physiological pattern that occurs in an individual and is usually associated with distress or disability that is not expected as part of normal development or culture.
Aside from people that cannot function or take care of themselves, I have identified two different types of people within my lifetime that do function within society, but possess a mental disorder.
Most of us have heard the phrase “Liberalism is a mental disorder”. This phrase would apply to the first type of individual I will describe. This type of affliction tends to affect women more than it does men. But there is a mental disorder or thought process that some individuals have that can be described as “what is good is bad, and what’s bad is good”. These types of people always seem to defend and back up anything that is harmful to society, but on the other hand, will criticize anything that is good for a society. An example of this would a female social worker that a coworker of mine had dealt with before. The coworker’s ex-wife had custody of his children and she was a hard core drug addict. He tried to tell this to the social worker, and her response was “Just because she is a drug addict doesn’t mean she is a bad mother”. These types of individuals will defend someone with low morale, but on the other hand will be the first person to criticize institutions such as the Catholic church. Their thought process views anything that is immoral as being “open minded”. Anything that is moral, to them, is being “close minded”. Another perfect example are women who will date men that are complete losers that belong in jail. I once knew a female years ago that was extremely picky in whom she was going to date and marry. She viewed people that had a college education as being losers. If you never had smoked pot before, she thought you were lame. So she went through and dated and dumped one guy after another, until finally she ended up with the one she would marry: a guy that was on house arrest and definitely looked like he belonged in jail. In her mind, this guy was a good guy. She felt so good that a complete loser such as this actually was being nice to her. Her marriage and offspring is all based on a mental disorder.
What is at the root of a mental disorder such as this? Sometimes, what is at the root, is simply the person’s self esteem. This type of person self consciously knows that they are rotten. They know that they themselves are immoral rotten individuals that are bad seeds. As a result, they have a natural disliking towards anyone else that is different from what they are, which is someone with good morals. As they go through life, they develop a thought process and a permanent viewpoint of the world around them. If someone commits a murder, then it was because they are oppressed and just “getting even”. If someone steals something, then it’s because society has oppressed that person and they did it because they are in poverty. But on the other hand, if someone displays a cross or a statue of Mary on their front lawn, they will become very offended. They associate those things with good morale. The people with good morale are their enemies. If you ever want to find these types of individuals, you can find them at any drug treatment facility, welfare office, country bar, most law schools, or borders book stores.
So what would be the second type of individual that functions in society, but has a mental disorder? I would describe this type of individual as “What is right is right, and what is right is right”. I’ve known at least two individuals with this affliction. I am actually working with one right now. He has pubic hairs for hair on his head and definitely needs to be punched in the face quite a few times. This type of individual fails to see shades of gray and will only do “what is right”. Meaning, for example, if you were friends with this guy, and you met up with him one night and you drank one beer, after you have left the bar, this guy would call the police on you because you had a drink and then went and drove. I’m not kidding. This guy would really do something like that. While I am the type of person that never tells a lie, I have the ability to recognize situations where it is ok and harmless to skew the truth simply because it’s no one’s business or it is information that someone just doesn’t need to know. So where can we find these types of individuals? We can find them on the road sometimes. They are the people driving a perfect 5 mph under the speed limit, with their seat belt on, and their hands in a perfect 10 to 2 position. Because that is what’s right! You can find lots of these types of individuals at Youth for Christ camps or gatherings. This person that I work with is like a lot of other people I have seen, but definitely has what I would describe as a mental disorder. He is a Youth for Christ member. He does not own a TV and forbids his wife to have one as well. His wife is rather homely looking and wears Youth for Christ t-shirts. He prays before lunch at work. And he will tell management on you if you ever make a mistake. That is where I draw the line. I actually thought this guy was ok at one time, but then I realized that he had a mental disorder when he would report any kind of mistake or error on my part or any other coworker’s part that just didn’t need to be revealed. That’s when I knew this guy definitely had a mental disorder. And it all made sense when I saw how “righteous” he was with everything. The radio in is car is stuck on the Christian station.
So there we have it. There are two types of individuals in society that carry mental disorders. One is to the extreme left, and the other is to the extreme right. What each doesn’t know is that they are both worthless to society. This is because of their inability to see shades of gray. Eventually each of these types of people could hinder someone else’s progress in life. They live their lives on a tangent and the number one person they are short changing is themselves. Their inability to see shades of gray inhibits the fun things that they could really be doing in life.
