Intelligent Design

0060-0507-0518-5147.jpgI was outside the other day and noticed the helicopter seeds twirl as they fall off of the tree and float about my yard. That simple observation let me know something more important than pretty much anything I had seen in the past year. What would watching these seeds twirl around like helicopters possibly have to tell me?

At that moment, it was dead quiet, the weather was slightly warm, and I could hear the the wind ruffling through the leaves. It was like God whispering to me. Although there are a lot of people living in my neighborhood, not a single person was outside witnessing the tiny miracle I was observing. Watching the helicopter seeds fall told me that this would never have come about by chance. There had to be intelligent design and thought behind it. Which then let me know that of course there is intelligent design behind each and every one of us as well. I did have one thought strike me, “Could life really be completely different than what we think? Is it possible that, since there is intelligent design that went into the helicopter seeds, and there is also intelligent design behind our existence, could it be that we are no more important than the seeds falling from the tree?” Could it be, that in the end, we will find out that our lives were no more significant than all the animals lives in the world, all the plants, all the insects? Could it really be just one big joke?

This is what I do know. There are three things in life to remember: 1.) It is important to have a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measures. 2.) Life has three aspects: Paradox, Humor, and Change. 3.) Life is a mystery, so don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.

Number 3 came to mind, and I respected it. Life is a mystery, so don’t waste my time trying to figure it out. And that’s what I did. The reality is that life is short. None of us are guaranteed a great long life. Why do I say that? We each have to remember that human beings have been roaming this earth for hundreds of thousands of years. And there has been archaeological evidence suggesting humans might go back even as far as 2 million years. We are only living in a tiny insignificant time era compared to the number of years other humans lived here before us. Even just a little over one or two hundred years ago, people died early deaths all the time. People were constantly dying in battle. There was always some sort of war going on. Life was just too short and fragile back then. There wasn’t a healthcare system a hundred years ago. You were on your own. If you had clogged arteries, then tough luck. If you had a bacterial infection, then tough luck again. If your teeth had cavities, then tough luck. This is how people lived then and thousands of years before that. They had their children very early in life because of the possibility of how short life could be. There was no TV back then, no movie theaters, no computers, no electricity, and no cars. Life was rather boring back then compared to what we have today. And I do not believe there is any reason why any of us are entitled to have it any better than what people did back then. So, whenever you start to have negative thoughts about your life, just remember that at least you were born in this time period, so you are lucky in that regard. There are billions before you that didn’t get the same chance you have today. Remember that because it makes you very lucky in an instant. So if you can find anything to smile about today, then at least smile about that.
