If I was CEO

This article is about H1B’s and if I was CEO of a corporation.  About 6 months ago, I had bought a 6-bottle wine cellar that was installed into an area of my kitchen. This cellar was a product of China. It was the only one I could find, otherwise I would have considered an American made one if there was one. Within 4 months, it stopped working completely. A component went bad on one the two circuit boards it has. I consider this more of a design flaw rather than a manufacturing flaw. Not only were these units manuafactured with cheap labor, they were also engineered with cheap H1B labor. Now, when it comes to engineering, engineers make up a very small fraction of the employees of a corporation. That one design mistake on the cheap unit that I bought cost the corporation that produced it a heck of a lot more money than they think they saved by hiring H1B engineers.  If I was CEO, this wouldn’t happen.

I have a buddy that worked for a cell phone startup company that had a chance to turn its penny stock into fortunes for all of the employees involved. Although the idea behind the product was excellent and there was a market for it, the phone kept failing during the testing phase. Eventually the money ran out and the doors had to close at this company. They could have hit it big with this product, but come to find out, there was a design flaw with the phone that was causing all the problems. The design flaw was of course created by an H1B engineer. Anyways, long story short, after the company layed everyone off, my buddy looked for employment with a company that is famous for the products it makes for the GPS market. Of course he was turned down when interviewed, but guess who this company didn’t turn down? The H1B worker that created the design flaw that ruined the startup company that my buddy came from!

It really makes no sense, especially when it comes to engineering, to hire H1B’s. Engineering and software departments make up a small fraction of a corporation, so there really isn’t a ton of money being saved. The hiring of foreign engineers is also based on a false stereotype by management and executives that foreigners are smarter than Americans. That is a complete stereotype. So they think they are getting a smart foreign engineer that is better than an American engineer for half the cost. What ends up happening, is the product designs that come out of the engineering department are inferior to what they could have been.

If I were the CEO of a corporation, I would put my money into engineering, instead of out. With the millions and billions that a corporation makes every year, they can afford to double every engineer’s salary, easily. What I would do is look for the best American engineers I could find and pay them up near $200K a year to produce superior designs for my products. I would want my engineers to replicate the era of German engineering when the products that were designed were bullet proof designs. A lot of products we use today originally came out of the German 1940’s era because their designs were so superior. I would know as a CEO that I would see long term profits with superior designs that come from high paid superior engineers rather than cheap H1B frauds they hire so they can save $20K per worker.

The only jobs I can see filling with H1B’s would be managers and most Executives. Because we all know the people that work these positions don’t do a damn thing at all. These are the jobs that either need to be restructured, or given to H1B’s. If I were CEO, I would put my money into engineering and sales. The rest of the jobs, especially those within management, executive, human resources, and the law department can be filled in with cheap H1B labor. None of those jobs require any kind of creativity, but engineering does. So that’s where I would put my money at because I know that superior engineers getting paid superior money create superior products that can keep getting produced and sold even decades after they are made. We all know that Germany wasn’t hiring engineers from Korea or India in the 1940’s. It was German-Jewish scientists that invented the nuclear bomb and German engineers that invented the jet engine. One of these days, some corporation will finally “get it” and re-establish this and create so much competition that all corporations will either have to follow, or continue to produce inferior junk with cheap labor because they want to save a few bucks.  That’s what I would do if I was CEO.
