Enlightenment
This is something everyone should do for several minutes each day. Preferably at night, because you’ll end up doing it for longer than planned. It’s more of a reminder because it’s probably nothing new to any of you. Set aside some time each day to live in the Here and Now. This can be achieved through simple meditation, which is something we are all capable of.
Find a place to sit in the upright position. Try not to do this while lying down because you will fall asleep. Close your eyes and tell yourself to “think nothing” and turn off all of your thoughts. Of course this will be difficult because you’ll find that your thoughts will keep coming because our minds are more active than what we realize. Because our minds are always constantly thinking and wondering and daydreaming, we are always living in the past or the future. Never the present. At this point, focus on your breathing and concentrate all of your attention on your breathing. Let yourself know that it is ok if thoughts from your mind arise. Just let them bubble to the surface and be released with each exhaled breath that you take.
After being in this state for 15 or 20 minutes, you will begin to feel as if you are just a “conscious being” existing outside of your body in the “Here and Now”. All you have to do is enjoy your existance and come to the realization that you are NOT your thoughts. Your thoughts are created and are the activity of your mind. Your conscious self is seperate from everything that your body does.
Once you are finished, open your eyes and take a deep breath. You should feel very relaxed and at peace with yourself. You see, a lot of us get worked up and stressed out every day. We get caught up in a world of stress and pressure that is placed on us. Our mind reacts to it with thoughts of doom, rage, fantasy, embarrassment, jealousy, false confidence, or future events that won’t ever occur. We become prisoners to this, and a lot of us become prisoners to it for a lifetime. And some even turn to alcohol and drugs to escape even though they don’t truly realize what it really is they are trying to escape from. You don’t have to become your thoughts. You can separate yourself from your thoughts. You CAN separate yourself from any bad feelings you have, and even any good feelings that you have because they AREN’T you. When you are able to live in the “Here and Now”, this is called Enlightenment. And through Enlightenment you can make the most rational decisions possible and enjoy your life in a different way than just about everyone on earth. Just look around you every day. You see people driving their SUV’s and talking on their cell phones. These people’s true lives are passing them by. They are prisoners in their own world of fantasy. They react to their thoughts and emotions and they let their thoughts and emotions determine what they are going to do. Once you come to the realization that you don’t HAVE to do or feel what your thoughts tell you, then you will be living in a different realm and on a different level than everyone around you. Through Enlightenment, you can live to the best of your ability and not let past and future thoughts lead you down the wrong path away from living to your full potential.
