Be an Impact Player

One thing to aim towards in enriching your life or your career is to be involved in something where you can make an impact.

What do I mean by that? Recently, I had become extremely dejected and irritated by the job I have. It had dawned on me that for years, I have been doing nothing but fulfilling support rolls for a corporation without ever realizing it. Basically, within a corporation, there are only one or two major projects going on that bring in the money. The rest of everything else isnothing but piddly little projects with very little financial gain to a company. The bigshots get to work on the big projects, and anyone that touches those projects either gets an immediate raise or a job promotion. The rest of us work on “support” projects to finish up loose ends in order for the corporation to keep or maintain contracts. So you can assure yourself that you will never be promoted or given any kind of significant raise as long as you are working on these itty bitty projects.

So when it comes to a career, above money, the first idea and direction you want to have is to look somewhere to go to where you can be an impact player. When you go in for a job interview, ask about what other projects are going on and ask what you will be working on. Ask if what you are going to be working on is of a great financial benefit to the company and what roll you are going to be playing in completing that project. Ask if there is a backlog of projects. If there is, then that is a good indication of more secure employment.

You will never go anywhere and you will never feel fulfilled in life if you cannot be an impact person. You are way too good and your time that you trade for dollars at a corporation is way to valuable to sit and watch someone else have the opportunity to be an impact person while you fulfill the “trainee” roll. I have much better direction now that I am more mature and have aged a bit. After so many years, I woke up and realized that I am still in the same “support” roles and there is someone always mentoring me or telling me what to do. If you find yourself in a similar situation, you will never get out of it until you take a proactive effort to go somewhere else. Don’t be afraid to leave a company, and do not have any sense of loyalty. Believe me, the day a corporation can make a dollar by getting rid of you, they’ll do it in a heartbeat. The support type of roles are ok for a person that is in the beginning of their career because they need the experience. After some time, you should be moving into leadership roles or jobs where what you are working on has a high financial impact on the company you are working for. Until you are working on those types of projects, then keep your resume out there.

Do not become a corporate slave. The best situation to be in is to be an impact player, and then get rewarded for your hard work. Have those two things in mind when it comes to your career. And if you need to do something outside of your career field to achieve this, then by all means do so. Don’t be a corporate slave and don’t let some imcompetent manager determine how your life is going to turn out.
